Hands-on: HP’s Envy x2 is a Surface clone boasting 20 hours of battery life - soriapludiam63
dmasaoka@idgcommunications.com Run across the HP Envy x2, a Surface Pro ringer with one big difference: Inside it is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip, offering battery life story of capable 20 hours. Simply we still don't jazz how fast it is.
Updated May 31, 2018, with pricing info: Information technology's $1,000 via Amazon.
The HP Enviousness x2 joins a organic process cohort of Surface Pro clones, but with one big difference: Inside it is a Snapdragon 835, oblation battery life of up to 20 hours. We spent a little time with it at the Qualcomm Technology Assembly to see what a new chip would neutralise an ingrained family.
Externally, HP's Envy x2 changes another keystone thing astir HP's crease of Windows tablets: IT removes the kickstand from the tablet itself and puts it internal the keyboard subject. Normally, that's a speculative decision: Samsung's Galaxy Book is an other excellent Windows tablet, but its keyboard case doesn't allow the tractableness of a true kickstand.
Mark Hachman / IDG The hinge is nowadays part of the keyboard cover on the HP Envy x2.
'tween the Asus NovaGo ultrabook also introduced Tuesday with a Snapdragon 835 and the Envy x2, the Enviousness x2 is clearly the more attention-getting design. (Hinderance out the Asus NovaGo handson for a more in-depth performance analysis.) We know a trifle about it: Kevin Frost, HP's vice president and general manager of Consumer Personal Systems, said it would include 4 UK of RAM and 128 GB of storage, as well as the 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon inside of IT.
Quick specs:
- Display: 12.3-inch WUXGA+ (1920×1200) panel
- CPU: Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Mobile PC Platform
- Memory: 8GB LPDDR4
- Storage: Up to 256GB
- Connectivity: Snapdragon X16 LTE modem
- OS: Windows 10 S
- Price: Undisclosed
- Transport engagement: Undisclosed
That kickstand, though, intrigues me. HP's 12.3-inch display contains a 1920×1200 exhibit, connected to a detachable Surface-like keyboard cover with an additional foldaway hinge. Normally, that hinge is included as part of the tablet. Here, it's split of the cover, and removing it leaves you with class of a gargantuan floppy fold sheet of pleather and a silvery tablet without whatever way of propping IT up. That's a gutsy design call, and time will tell whether it's the reactionist one.
Mark Hachman / IDG The HP Envy x2 includes a USB-C port (without Thunderbolt on the left side of the lozenge.
The Envy x2 endorses the USB-C connector, though there's exclusively one, tucked low on the left-hand side and used for charging and I/O. Unfortunately, it lacks Thunderbolt capabilities.
The only other way to tell that this is something a little different is the SIM card expansion slot connected the right-hand position of the tablet—indicative that H.P. included Qualcomm's gigabit modem inner, and in all probability a prophetical of similar SIM visiting card slots to come.
Stigma Hachman / IDG A SIM card one-armed bandit appears on the right-handwriting sidelong of the Envy x2 tablet.
Buy it for the barrage, whatever IT may be
Battery life will be the selling point, though, even if it's still not rather clear what itis.
If you show the small print under Icing's presentation on Tuesday, it revealed an interesting configuration: in addition to 8GB of storage—the Envy x2 has 4GB —the 22-minute battery life claim was predicated on an anemic 150 nits of brightness. That's well less than the 250-260 nits's brightness that PCWorld considers a typical setting for indoor apply. It's certainly possible that (storm!) manufacturers could be playacting a little of hankie-panky with battery-life numbers. We simply won't know until we have a fortune to put the Begrudge x2 through its paces.
Some the HP Envy x2 and Asus NovaGo running play Windows 10 S, the reading of Windows 10 that restricts users to Windows Stock apps. You'll have a free opportunity to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, though that will offering skyward a new wrinkle: Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips run traditional, not-UWP apps via emulation, and performance will suffer somewhat—though again, we don't know how much. In a presentation at Qualcomm's event, Microsoft did read apps are emulated, and cipher is stored locally indeed to help better carrying out the second clip around.
Mark Hachman / IDG We're non predestined if a pen will total standard on the HP Envy x2, merely the company was showing one off this hebdomad.
Probably the most commonly used non-UWP app is the browser, which means that choosing Microsoft Adjoin—a UWP app—over a browser like Chromium-plate may undergo a significant impression on your laptop's performance. Pat Moorhead, an independent analyst, said a Qualcomm-powered twist he was able to test for a few days delivered performance that was better than foretold. When I upgraded an Asus NovaGo to Windows 10 In favou and then ran Chrome, however, webpages took all but twice as long to load on Chrome versus Edge.
As I said in my hands-on with the Asus NovaGo, it's simply excessively early to distinguish what lifelong-term performance will follow like with the Envy x2 or unusual Snapdragon-powered devices. Qualcomm executives would like us to skip canned benchmarks entirely in favor to a greater extent "experiential" metrics. We'll take that advice with a grain of salt, but they're right-handed that living with a device care the HP Envy x2 will be a different know than it would be for a emblematic PC. We're eager to feel out.
